Buy emergency supplies, save money during Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginians can save money and get ready for hurricane/flooding season during the Commonwealth’s tax-free shopping week set for May 25-31.

No sales tax is charged on the purchase of many items that can be used to prepare homes and businesses and to fill emergency supply kits during Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. All retailers participate, according to Virginia law.

Among the items that will be exempt from sales tax are:

Batteries, including cell phone batteries
Battery-powered light sources, such as flashlights and lanterns
Bottled water of all types and sizes, including flavored, carbonated and vitamin waters
Battery-powered and/or hand-crank radios, including those with electrical power option
Weather band radios and NOAA Weather Radios
First aid kits
Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
Fire extinguishers
Tarps, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, duct tape
Water storage containers, including coolers, buckets, barrels, canteens
Storm shutter devices
Portable generators

For a complete list, go to www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=STHoliday.

“Last year proved that Virginia is not immune from hurricanes and tropical systems,” said Michael Cline, state coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. “Five Virginians died as a result of Hurricane Irene in late August, which caused the second-highest number of power outages in Virginia history. Then we were hit by the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee in September that took the lives of five citizens and displaced hundreds more. Nearly the entire state was affected to some extent, and we were left with millions of dollars in property damage. Everyone should take steps to prepare for this hurricane season.”

Hurricane season starts June 1. Additional information about preparing for hurricane and flooding season is available at www.ReadyVirginia.gov

Operation Wildfire

The following message is from Glen Sage W4GHS explaining the next SET.  We promised the County a lot of things, so we need you to sign up.  You may feel that you may not be available, but things change.  Sign up now and you can cancel later if it becomes necessary.  Right now I need signups.

We are only about 3
weeks from our upcoming Simulated Emergency Test to be held on October 1, 2011.
If you have not register as a ham radio operator or agency reprehensive, we
invite you to do so.  The link to the registration page for both hams and
agencies can be found by clicking here.   To learn more
about this event click here. We invite any ham or agency within the Blacksburg NWS office forecast area to join us for this training. There will be a planning meeting on Saturday, September 24th at 4:00 PM. This will we an ideal time to secure additional information on the exercise or call me at 276-398-3549.

Operation Wildfire:

Our area Simulated Emergency Test will be held on October
1, 2011 beginning at 0900 and continuing until 1300 (1:00 PM).  This simulation will be based on a Forest
Fire (wildfire) situation.  Simulated
conditions will be a dry summer and an early dry fall proceeded by a winter of
heavy ice and high winds pruning much of the timber of dead limbs in the area of
southern Carroll
County Virginia.
Thus the ground is covered with brush and dry fallen limbs on the forest
floor.  By the time the fire is reported
it will have several hours to grow. The fire will begin in the early morning
hours when people are still asleep.  In
these early hours, the flames have been pushed by high winds on the mountain
above 3200 feet elevation.  The first
indication of problems is when police, fire and rescue radio repeaters go off
the air.  These were all housed at the
highest point in the county on Beamers Knob at an elevation of about 3680
feet.  The nearby cell tower has also
been taken off the air. Hard wired phone exchanges (728) and (730) covering the
county seat of Hillsville and the (236) exchange covering the City of Galax and areas around
Woodlawn have been taken out but the fire.
By daybreak on October 1st the simulation has brought most normal
communications to a near halt.  Much of
public service has to depend on “talk around” (simplex) and some of the remote
repeaters that have been used as remote receivers have been switched to act as a
repeater but at a much lower elevation than Beamers Knob.  All Internet customers depending on dialup
and DSL in the 728, 730 and 236 exchanges have lost their Internet and email
service.

Public service such as police, fire, rescues and search
and rescue have been toned out to meet the challenge of this simulation.  This is the entry point for EmComm to be
called out to provide emergency communications for failed or overloaded
communications systems.   At 9:00 am
there will be a message concerning current weather conditions give by Skywarn at
the NWS office, followed by the activation of emergency communications
groups.

Purpose and goals for this
exercise:

To insure seamless operation of EmComm groups in various
jurisdictions

To combine the effective use of digital and voice to
provide the needed agency communications service

To provide an opportunity for new hams to experience a
simulated exercise

To provide an opportunity for supported agencies to work
with our EmComm groups in a realistic drill

To provide an opportunity for hams to work with the
National Weather Service in a non-typical situation

To provide an opportunity for hams to meet training
requirements to advance, or retain EmComm certification that requires periodic
activation or Simulated Emergency Test
participation

To provide an opportunity for hams to work a drill that
requires passing a high volume of traffic on behalf of served
agencies

This exercise is not an attempt to test Amateur Radio
operator’s ability to grab a “go bag” and get to an unannounced disaster
scenario as quickly as possible.  You
will know your assignment and the scenario prior to the activation.  The activation will provide an adequate
challenge without the element of a surprise
deployment.

Hams are welcome to register and participate regardless
of affiliation or the lack of affiliation.
We are looking for RACES, ARES, members of clubs interested in emergency
communications or individuals that are non-affiliated hams.

September 10th Meeting Notes

press Release    EmComm trailer  This will be the main attraction in the Courthouse parking lot.

The September meeting will be pretty much replaced by a show and tell in the courthouse parking lot.  We hope to have a short business meeting at 8:40 AM before everybody disappears to the courthouse.

You are encouraged to wear your RACES badge and hat if you have one to the EmComm trailer demonstration.  We need to get our pictures taken with it and first responders.

VE testing will be conducted on 8 October.  There will be more details later.

Good afternoon everyone,
Well the sun is shinning and it’s time
to get your books either on order or broken off of the shelf it’s been sitting
on for the last 5 years or so.
There will
be a testing session at the Floyd Rescue Squad Station one on the 8th of
October, 2011 at 10am. The price of the testing is $15.00
This will
be after our short meeting at 9 at suite 9 of the Village Green, or the
Community Ham Station.  I hope that I will see all of you that want get your
upgraded tickets at this session.
If you know of
“ANYONE” who would like to get into ham radio, and they need a Technician’s
book, I have 3 left to sell here, these are $23.00 each. Also if you would like
I will contact them for you, just send me their email or phone number and when
it would be a good time to contact them.  OH and before I forget again, the
price for taking the test’s is $15.00.  Now the nice thing about this is that
the price is for the session, so if you want to take all three exams in one
sitting (yes it has been done a lot), the price stays at $15.00. I know I am
studying and hope to pass my Extra for this session.

KG4MAV Antenna Party

The skyline will never be the same at 1090 Hale Road.  Christmas tree farms are now giving way to an antenna farm.  Long live ham radio..

Russ reports that all the hardware is up, but not all the coax is connected.  One more trip up the tower.

For more pictures of the KG4MAV antenna party, please visit the PHOTOS page.
